Japan Plans AI Data Center to Rival OpenAI Stargate
Japan is advancing plans to construct one of the world's largest AI data center hubs in Nanto, Toyama prefecture, with a projected power capacity of 3.1 gigawatts. The initiative, developed in partnership with GigaStream Toyama, positions Japan as a competitive player in global AI infrastructure, directly challenging projects like OpenAI's Stargate.
The Nanto facility will rank among the top data centers globally by scale, though it remains smaller than Stargate's targeted 10-gigawatt capacity. This MOVE reflects Japan's strategic push to capitalize on surging demand for AI and cloud computing resources, while diversifying its technological infrastructure beyond traditional sectors.
